With three levels of government, understanding who does what can get very confusing... There is a bit of overlap, but, in a nutshell, we have: FEDERAL
Responsible for issues that affect all Australians (national issues) Post, telephones and the internet, Money, Immigration, Defence
STATE & TERRITORY
Responsible for issues that affect people in that state or territory Public transport, Schools, Hospitals, Public housing, Roads, Housing Planning
LOCAL
Responsible for issues that affect local communities Rubbish, Parks, Sports fields and Swimming pools, Pet control, Parking, Libraries, Local Roads, Local Buildings, Permits
Representatives from all levels of government are listed at this website 'Our Community'
Our OneStreet group collectively took an interest in our local candidates at our recent local government elections.
We were able to contact our existing Councillors through the email addresses or phone numbers supplied on our council's website.
It was a bit harder to get to know the candidates - but google searches, facebook (looking at their past actions BEFORE becoming a candidate), and meet the candidates' events were very informative, allowing us to make informed decisions about who we thought would uphold our values and principles.
All very helpful as we took our opinions and learnings to the voting booth.

Video: Three levels of Government
It can be hard to get your head around the levels of government.
This video has been made by 'Behind the News' to show in simple terms how the three levels work.
A map showing the boundaries of the LGAs in Australia is available for viewing.
Click the button below, then in the 'Choose a Boundary Type' dropdown, select '2021 Local Government Area (LGA)' and place your postcode in the 'Find address or place'.
There are other boundaries available through this map as well - Commonwealth Electoral Division, State Electoral Division and more.
